Spinup
Spinup at a glance
Spinup is Yale's self-service cloud platform for quickly deploying servers and applications with built-in security and Yale integrations.
Who is Spinup for?
Development, instructional use, pilot applications, and many research workloads that do not require elevated controls or a managed environment.
Core features
- Intuitive, Yale-focused design. Provision and manage cloud resources in minutes without learning platform-specific jargon or complex consoles.
- Robust security by default. Spinup servers sit behind Yale's enterprise firewall with no direct access from the internet. Operating system updates are applied automatically, and servers receive daily backups with up to 14 days of retention.
- Seamless access to Yale services. Because Spinup resources live on the Yale network, they can reach email, Active Directory (AD), Storage@Yale shares, and other campus services. Operating system licenses are covered by Yale's enterprise agreements.
- Dedicated networking for performance. A private connection between Yale and major cloud providers (such as Direct Connect) gives Spinup resources Yale IP addresses and DNS entries for fast, private connectivity.
- Transparent pricing & TryIT. You are charged as you would be on AWS, with a renewable 30-day TryIT option for experimentation before you commit.
- Community and support. Access FAQs, Getting Started tutorials, built-in Help, and a dedicated Slack channel where the Spinup team and community share tips.
How to get started
- Log in to Spinup at https://spinup.internal.yale.edu (from campus or VPN).
- Create a Space to organize your project's servers, databases, storage, and other resources.
- Add a COA and set budgets so costs stay predictable.
- Add an SSH key to your profile, then launch your first server or other resource from your Space and manage backups, firewalls, and costs there.
